Road Traffic Rules
in Thailand: What Tourists Need to Know
Car rental in Hua Hin is the best way to travel comfortably and see more than the beach near your hotel. To make your trip stress-free, it is enough to understand the basic features of driving and prepare in advance.
What documents are required to rent a car in Thailand?
To rent a car and drive safely, you will need the following documents:

National driver's license
International driver's license (for long-term rentals)

At GetMyCar, we will remind you of all the necessary documents and help you verify them during the booking process.
The basic rules of the road in Thailand
Left-hand traffic

In Thailand, traffic is on the left, and the steering wheel is on the right.
This may seem unusual, but most tourists get used to it within 10-15 minutes.

How we help: when you pick up your car, our manager will give you a briefing and tell you
about all the details of driving.

Speed limits

  • In cities: 50–60 km/h
  • On the highway: 90–120 km/h

There are speed cameras on the roads, so we recommend driving "in the flow" — in Thailand, local drivers prefer to drive slowly.

Seat belts

All passengers, including those in the back row, must be wearing their seat belts. Failure to wear a seat belt is punishable by a fine of 2,000 baht.

Child safety seats

Since September 2022, Thailand has a requirement: children under 6 years old must be
in a car seat. Violation - fine 2000 baht.

At GetMyCar, we offer child seats and boosters for all ages. Please specify your requirements when booking.

Drunk driving

  • The fine is from 20,000 baht, and there may be criminal consequences
  • The insurance does not apply

Police officers often set up checkpoints on roads and in beach areas and test drivers for alcohol.

Parking space

  • Parking is allowed with black and white markings on the curbs
  • Red and white markings on the curbs mean that parking is prohibited
  • The fine is 1,000 baht

We recommend that you focus on the locals, and also avoid parking in places
where you will be a nuisance to others.

Documents

The driver must have with him:

  • National driver's license
  • International driver's license (preferable)

The fine for not having the documents is 1,000 baht.

It is important to note that car insurance is only valid if the driver has a valid national driver's license.
